To start a FBLA chapter, a school needs a business teacher who is willing to become a chapter adviser as well as a minimum of five paid members. The teacher can contact bev.newton@nebraska.gov to receive a new chapter packet.

What do you do at the State Leadership Conference?

The State Leadership Conference (SLC) is designed for members to explore their strengths and develop their skills through competitive events and workshops. Throughout the three-day conference, members participate in competitive events, attend workshops and general sessions, listen to motivational speakers, and network with other members throughout the state. The election of the next year’s state officers also occurs during the State Leadership Conference.

How do people win at the State Leadership Conference?

Winning at the State Leadership Conference rarely coincides with luck. It takes preparation and dedication for competitors to win. To excel in any event, competitors must obtain study materials, develop a product, or conduct chapter activities and prepare a summary of the activity in a written report. There are over 50 competitive events so preparation for each event is different. Contact your local adviser for more information and study resources.

What to you do at the National Leadership Conference?

The National Leadership Conference (NLC) provides opportunities such as travel experiences because the location varies for each NLC. It also gives the opportunity for the competitive event finalists from each state to compete to further develop their strength and skills. Also, members attend a variety of workshops to help develop their career and leadership skills. Finally, members elect the national officer team.

How do people qualify to compete at the National Leadership Conference?

To qualify for the National Leadership Conference (NLC), competitors must win first or second place and in some cases third place in their competitive event. The qualifications vary by event so check your local chapter’s Nebraska FBLA Handbook or look online at www.nebraskafbla.org for specific information.

Why is a professional dress code important at conferencese?

Professional attire is important at conferences because FBLA is a professional student organization that prepares students for careers in business and business-related areas. Professional attire is required by the state and national FBLA Dress Code. Professional attire affects conduct and helps you make a positive impression on competitive event judges and business professionals attending the conference.

How do you become a Nebraska State FBLA Officer?

To become a state officer, you have to meet all of the state requirements. First, you submit an application to the FBLA state office postmarked on or before the application deadline. After the application is received, you are notified of your interview time. Then on State Officer Screening Day, you interview with the Nebraska FBLA Board of Directors and take the screening test. After you are notified that you have successfully completed the Screening Day activities, you qualify to be a state officer candidate.

During the SLC, you will give a 2-minute speech at the opening general session and run a campaign booth. If your efforts are successful, you will obtain a majority vote from the local chapter delegates and become the next state officer.

Note: the position for State Parliamentarian is not an elected position. To become the State Parliamentarian, you must achieve the highest score of all of the State Parliamentarian candidates on the Parliamentary Procedure event exam.

How much time does it take to be a state officer?

The amount of time you spend as a state officer depends on your planning ability. A general average is about 5 hours a week. At busy times of the year, the state officers work hours during weekends as well weekdays. One of the busy times of the year is during August and September when you prepare for the Fall Leadership Conference (FLC). Time during August and September is spent planning FLC workshops.

Another busy time is during the spring from February to April because of State Officer Screening Day and the State Leadership Conference. From February to April, state officers prepare a presentation for Officer Candidate Screening Day in February. Then from February to April they prepare for SLC.

What is the most challenging aspect of being a state officer?

One of the more challenging aspects of being a state officer is time management. There are deadlines to meet, which requires being able to organize your priorities and time. Another challenging aspect of being a state officer is to think of exciting new activities for Nebraska FBLA to keep all of the members active.

What is a good way to recruit non-FBLA members?

A good way to recruit non-FBLA members is to invite them to a local chapter meeting where there will be a program telling them about the benefits of FBLA. It will also help if there is a fun activity such as dodge ball or movies afterwards. Also, it’s a great idea to provide food at your chapter meetings or activities.

The purpose of American Enterprise Day is to celebrate and educate others about the freedom and the privilege to operate and own a business because of the enterprise system of the United States.

What is the purpose of the Nebraska FBLA Foundation?

The purpose of the Nebraska FBLA Foundation is to support the Nebraska FBLA members by providing funding to attend the national conference, scholarships, and leadership development activities. The first priority from the Foundation will be to provide national competitors with a stipend to help them pay some of their travel and lodging expenses.
